Da 60 anni a questa parte, il fantasma degli scienziati nazisti aleggia nella coscienza collettiva e puntualmente il politico di turno attinge all'archivio degli orrori per condannare come ‘nazista’ la ricerca sugli embrioni e l'eutanasia o per giustificare mostruosità come la creazione delle armi nucleari. Ma chi erano gli scienziati di Hitler? Come gestirono il patto con l'Ossesso? Perché la loro storia è ancora assolutamente rilevante e attuale? Gli scienziati di Hitler di John Cornwell, (Garzanti, 2006, 28 euro) ci fornisce un racconto pieno di protagonisti e di storie che inquietano e coinvolgono, un racconto accessibile a tutti e che si legge d’un fiato, ma che nel privilegiare un approccio in ampiezza, perde in profondità: basta per esempio considerare la storia dell’atomica di Hitler, che continua a far discutere da 60 anni, ebbene, Cornwell impiega sei (!) capitoli per raccontare fatti arcinoti, senza poter vantare un solo commento originale o anche una ricostruzione appassionante, com’è la storia di quella bomba al centro di mille intrighi mai chiariti. Ma in ogni caso il libro di Cornwell merita, perché fornisce una panoramica completa delle aberrazioni naziste in tema di scienza: dagli esperimenti medici sugli esseri umani, di cui Mengele è solo un esempio, al coinvolgimento del colosso della chimica tedesca IG Farben nello sterminio degli ebrei, dal ciarpame pseudoscientifico caro al capo delle SS Himmler, alla sinistra scienza dei razzi. E parlando di razzi, una storia inquietante raccontata da Cornwell è senz’altro quella di Wernher von Braun, il cui nome rimarrà per sempre legato alle micidiali V1 e V2, che terrorizzarono Londra durante la seconda guerra mondiale.

Furbo e senza scrupoli, von Braun venne reclutato giovanissimo nel programma missilistico tedesco, portato avanti a Peenemünde, una base che solo un giornalista sui generis come Luigi Romersa, inviato dal Duce alla ricerca delle armi segrete di Hitler, ha avuto il coraggio di definire ‘magnifica’ - del resto Romersa dice anche di aver assistito al test dell’atomica di Hitler…Per chi ci lavorava, Peenemünde era disumana: la base, infatti, andava avanti grazie al lavoro di operai-schiavi detenuti nei lager e trattati in modo eccezionalmente crudele. Ma se Peenemünde era disumana, Mittelwerke era l’inferno in terra.
